I just started hooping a few weeks ago, it's winter here, my house is TINY and stuffed with furniture and art supplies so I only have room to hoop at my waist and chest. No arm stuff, no knee stuff, no neck stuff, no overhead stuff....
And, I have one tiny spot on the floor that I can hoop without hitting anything. AND, it's cold as HECK oustide.
So, after all that whining, what I REALLY want is to know is?
1.are there any other MIssouri hoopers out there?
2. Where's the best place to find out about hooping camps and seminars? I've looked on Hooping.org but haven't found where they might be listed. So far, I've heard of "Hoop Camp", "Hoop Convergence", and maybe "hoop path"(?) in Philly next weekend.
3. are there ever any hoop camps where people actually CAMP? These events look expensive, and while I very much wanna see the teachers get all the money that is their due, I can totally do without giving money to hotels and lodges. I'm a little broke these years...
4.Has anyone been to, or heard of, any hoop classes/seminars in the midwest?
I have searched on tribe for Midwest Hoopers, st. louis hoop, all kinds of stuff, and I'm coming up with blanks except for one woman who apparently ownes a hoop and lives somewhere in the midwest who I may contact out-of-the-blue, even though she may think I'm a psycho.
I wanna hoop with other people, and my friends won't do it.
THanks for any help
Party on!

Re: Help! I'm stuck in Missouri and I can't get OUT!!!
Wed, December 3, 2008 - 5:59 PMhi Constance,
i can't really help you much except to reassure you that you're not alone when it comes to lack of hoop space and funds for pricey hoop weekends.
it's not too too cold here, but it's often very wet, and there aren't a lot of covered public spaces. apartments are expensive, so anything affordable is tiny and often with a low ceiling. (i'm apartment hunting now, so this is at the front of my mind.)
the only advice i can think of for creating hoop community is to get out there with your hoop. if there are any clubs or concerts where there might be enough space to hoop, bring your hoop. people will start asking about it and getting interested and you can recruit them for your very own hoop community. :)
good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of hooping! -

Re: Help! I'm stuck in Missouri and I can't get OUT!!!
Fri, December 5, 2008 - 4:28 AMGood Luck. It is very tough to be a hooper. It is a lonely road (or path) we have chosen. (Or did it choose us?) I have watched an entire year of hoop events pass me by.. They are all expensive. You can camp at the Hoop Path Retreat in Carrboro NC in June. I went and I couldn't afford the workshops and they were sold out anyway. It was freakin' hot and you couldn't hardly hoop outside it was so hot. So all I can tell you - is keep on doing it. Do it for yourself and you might spin some hoop friends into being. I went to a health fair yesterday and couldnt get anyone to even try hooping. They just looked at me and said "I can't do it." They were all nurses and overweight and probably were afraid to do it in front of each other. I run into lots of this here in the bible belt. And up in PA where I am from people are generally uptight and out of shape too. So it seems to be a losing battle everywhere.. unless you live in a big city or in CA. I am not willing to move to places like that. Yet.
Talk to local gyms and schools about perhaps finding an indoor space for you. I understand about not being able to hoop outside. When I was just up in PA - I couldn't find hoop room anywhere. It was snowy out. I found I could hoop in the bedroom if I stood right against the bed. I could hoop on the bed (on my knees) and then I figured out I could hoop in the basement if I kept it low. I had a great summer of hooping b/c of free concerts and events. This weekend I plan on jumping in on the Christmas Parade again. It was great fun last year! -

Re: Help! I'm stuck in Missouri and I can't get OUT!!!
Fri, December 5, 2008 - 5:08 AMI'm in the same boat.
Similar situation as Mtn. HoopS... I am stuck in retirementland of snowbirds and bible belters and it is hard to get people to try it sometimes ( or much of anything else for that matter)
No concerts or shows locally either that would be hoopable. ( My last concert , it was so packed. It was hard enough not to get squished, much less do anything else)
I can't afford the expense of really far away camps or have the time to go for days to something either. And I'm it in this area as far as hoopers go that I can find ( and I've tried. There was a very small group *3-5* at one point, but looks like most moved or inactive now.)
Hoop for you, because you enjoy it. I may never get to do a large event , club or workshop but it won't take away from the fun, joy and peace I feel when hooping.
I signed up for the Hoopnotica teacher training in hopes that one day I will be able to at least get a few people addicted and shown properly how to do it. It gives me something to work towards and if it works out great and if not I will continue to happily hoop my little rear off lol.
I don't expect to make any money in this area teaching and probley will spend more than I make after insurance, space rental, permits , license's etc( I expect alot of us do it for the love of hooping) But if I can end up getting even a few people interested and able to hoop with me. It will be worth it.

Re: Help! I'm stuck in Missouri and I can't get OUT!!!
Mon, December 8, 2008 - 8:32 AMi hear you as far as lack of space in the winter. when i recieved my first hoop from a friend, i was living manhattan. there was a tiny square in my living room and bedroom in the middle where i could waist hoop very carefully. then i moved back to buffalo ny (in winter of course!) and i didnt really start to advance beyond waist hooping until that spring. lack of space is not condusive to the exploration needed. don't be frustrated if you don't have space to learn much this winter. use what you got and get really good at waist/hip hooping and hand hooping. you have to have those things under your belt before you can do more advanced things anyways
i dont know much about any events local to you... but if you can't find hoopers... make em! i got a few good friends hooked, as well as started holding jams/lessons in a local park. buffalo was only kind of receptive to this, but it was good to get out and get people hooping. i mostly hooped by myself tho with a big stack of hoops. this is not a winter soloution tho :P
do you have a gym membership? most gyms have studio space for yoga classes etc that you can use when they're not signed out. local dance studios might also receptive to this, for a fee, unless you're tight with them

Re: Help! I'm stuck in Missouri and I can't get OUT!!!
Thu, December 11, 2008 - 8:16 PMThanks you guys.
I hear ya about the Nurses not wanting to hoop - I worked at a hospital for years, and those nurses, who weren't afraid to save lives, WERE kinda chicken about anything "out of the ordinary" - AND they were not too healthy either.
What I'm hearing here, is that I may haveta make my own hooping friends. Well, I am totally game for that.
I have two hurdles to overcome, and I am sure that, eventually, I can.
First - I can't really HOOP yet. I mean, right now, I look kinda goofy. I'm not concerned though. I practice only a little each day, but I'll get there, and as soon as I can look even REMOTELY competent, (I'm not even talking fancy tricks or anything), I'll venture out and see if I can get someone to join me.
Second - I have yet to find the proper materials around here to make hoops, and I know I'll have to have some extra's at first.
I know that eventually, I'll find what I need, even if it's mail-order materials, so I'm not too worried about that either.
One thing that's weird is that I'm 47 years old, and I KNOW none of my girlfriends are gonna go for it. They have more excuses than I have hair as to why they can't get off the couch. I'm thinking that many younger women are gonna wonder if, seeing me, it's not COOL to hoop, because it's obviously an Old Lady's activity, or something...
You know, just trying to guess what I'll be facing when I start hoopin in public and trying to get people interested in having some fun.
Of course, the GOOD thing'll be that, as an older squatty woman, I am completely non-threatening looking. It's not like my super-hottie looks will scare anyone away or intimidate anyone! hah!!!
So, all in good time, I guess.
As for hooping at my gym...
I have thought of that. I am a little shy right now, because I look so uncoordinated, and the gym and it's staff and customers are not exactly the most diverse or friendly group of people, but I am seriously considering it.
At night, after 10pm, the aerobics room is empty. I think I might try it. GOSH - I would love all that space and those mirrors! -

Re: Help! I'm stuck in Missouri and I can't get OUT!!!
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 8:44 AMi say, get your skill level up this winter, and once the weathers better you can go out and wow folks with your healthy energy and the obivous fun.
winter is a tough time to make hooping buddies. in the spring, i'd suggest putting an ad in your local artsy/alternative paper, if there is one, as well as craigslist. tribe obviously... but you want to reach beyond the people who have already been exposed to hooping and hook those noobz! you could put up flyers at yoga studios, gyms... that would be a good place to get people who are already health/body conscious
happy hooping this winter! good luck with finding some one to hoop with, you'll find someone, but it might take till the weathers better :)
