This is a hooping tribe

This tribe is for hooping and all that entails. I don't think that it's the best place to post a bunch of video links that have nothing to deal with hooping. Although I'm sure some of the videos are informative/entertaining/important, it would just be nice if we could dedicate this tribe to what we've all come here for instead of cluttering the boards with unrelated topics. I'm not trying to be imposing at all, I was just throwing my opinion out there. Thanks.

First National Hooper's Conference!!!

Hoop Convergence ~ Friday April 11 - Wednesday April 16, 2008

Please join us for the very first national (hopefully International!) Hooper’s Conference -- The Hoop Convergence.

The Hoop Convergence is the bringing together of a wide variety of hoopers from all over the world to create a synergistic learning environment where we will address all aspects of hooping. There will be panel discussions and workshops with a variety of amazing teachers and hoopers from all over the United States.

The Convergence will be held in beautiful the Hooper Haven of Carrboro, NC. Everything in this wonderful town is in walking distance and already many local hoopers are opening their homes or offering camping on their property to visiting hoopers from all over the country. Make plans to join us now.

To learn more, volunteer, make suggestions or arrange for a place to stay, please join the tribe Hoop Convergence at: http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

Here are some of the amazing workshops and activities that are confirmed as of right now:

HOOP SKILLS WORKSHOPS
Currently, Spiral, Revolva, Caroleeena and Jewels are all confirmed to teach. These workshops will teach a variety of hooping techniques, including hand work, footwork, bodywork and dance, as well as hooping specialties, such as street performance and twin hooping. There will be workshops appropriate to all skill levels and other classes will be added to the curriculum as they are confirmed. Workshop details are forthcoming.

YOGA, INJURY PREVENTION & HEALING
We will host an injury prevention discussion panel made up of yogis, hoopers, massage therapists and other body/mind workers and healers. Hopefully we will be able to offer a HoopYoga workshop as well.

COSTUME DESIGN and THEATER MAKE-UP WORKSHOPS
In addition to learning costume design and theater make-up, the Convergence will also include a trade circle, a costume swap, sewing and non-sewing methods for making/decorating costumes, pattern shares, and a discussion where we will share ideas about themes, hoopable clothing and info for creating fire safe costumes . If you stay for the entire week, there will be excursions to some kick ass thrift stores too! (Then, after the Convergence, you can try out your new threads at Shakori Hills the following weekend!)

COMMUNITY, SERVICE PROJECTS and WORLD HOOP DAY
There will also be a discussion panel on community building, event planning, service projects and World Hoop Day. Hoopin' Annie O, creator of World Hoop Day, Jewels, who created Hoops for Haiti, and Caroleeena, who started the Henrietta Jensen Outreach and Education Project in Jamaica are all confirmed and will all be available to help you envision and manifest your world hoop day events or community outreach projects. (Hopefully Xta will be able to make it also!)

FIRE
On Saturday night, we will have a drum circle and fire ceremony with fire dancing. If you haven't fire hooped before, this could be your moment! There will also be discussions on Fire Philosophy & Ritual, Safety, Tool Repair, Craft and Professionalism. (There may also be a workshop highlighting a variety of different fire hoops and build techniques. We may not have time amidst everything else to build our own fire hoops, but maybe. If not, I'm sure you can order one from a local crafter to be customized for you and ready for your arrival to NC or to be shipped to you when you return home.)

JAM ~ DANCE PARTY
Sunday night, we will have a funky, dressy, jamming hoop hop set. There will also be a pre-party, house-party for dressing and making up!

OTHER THINGS we hope to include are:
Performances by and for each other
Publicity and Marketing
Business Management and Taxes for Professionals
Teaching Techniques
Hooping with kids
Sharing Poetry and Stories
Hoop Philosophy and Spirituality

Finally, if we can manage it, and if we have enough people at Shakori Hills, I think it would be fun to try to choreograph and premier the world’s largest choreographed hoop dance! I know they would let us do it there. We just have to see if we can make it happen!

We have lots of other ideas too – Circus hooping, Native American Hoop Dance, Rhythmic Gymanastics, Hoop Yoga, integrating specific types of dance into hooping, and more – but those things may have to wait until next year … unless you know someone willing and/or able to teach! If you have an idea for a workshop, please join the Hoop Convergence Tribe and share it with us! http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

If you would like to teach or lead a discussion panel, please post that on the Hoop Convergence tribe too or feel free to PM a description to Jewels at hoopflow@gmail.com. We will accommodate what we can given space availability and group sizes. Teaching or leading a panel will enable you to attend other workshops for free. Depending on our turnout, you will hopefully also receive compensation for your efforts. (We are still working out the estimated costs for this event but we are working to keep them reasonable. Several teachers are volunteering altogether.)

Prices and other details will follow soon. New items are being added everyday!

If you can stay through the week, festivities, workshops, discussion panels and field trips will be offered Friday through Wednesday. Then, on Thursday, we'll head over to Silk Hope for a great, family-friendly, hooper-rich, inexpensive local music festival with incredibly sweet vibes through the following Sunday!

If you can't stay through the week and for the music festival, there will be plenty of hoopy goodness happening during the weekend from Fri - Sun/Mon. Do try to stay Sunday night for a big jam and costuming pre-party though!

For more information about the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Peace and Dance (April 17 - 20, 2008), go to: www.shakorihills.org

Again, if you are willing and able to participate in any way, please do! Your input and expertise are essential. So please join the Hoop Convergence tribe today. We hoopfully hope to hoop with you soon!

Injury Prevention/Healing and Hooping ~ "Hoop Convergence" Council

Greetings fellow hoopers~
I am co-planning a HOOP CONVERGENGE in Carrboro, NC in April 2008 (check it out tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence.) In addition to workshops and panels on topics such as hoop movement techniques, costuming, performance, busking, fire dance and make-up, a focus area is injury prevention because we know it is important, as the love of hooping continues its spiraling embrace across the globe, that we are able to sustain our practices into our *golden* years.

I've researched the related threads on tribe and hooping.org archives for accounts and suggestions for healing therapies. We all know about bruises and black eyes, but I am more curious about other types of hoop related incidents that have a more lasting imprint on the body's comfort level and hooping enjoyment or ability.

TESTIMONIALS
I'd appreciate any experiences (with injury and healing) you'd like to share as our council of hooping yogis collaborates to have greater understanding of the human body moving within the hoop.
The following threads include testimonials describing intense knee pain, back pain and intense bruising as well as suggestions for stretches, tips on when/how to stretch and other prevention techniques that I found in the
ARCHIVES OF HOOPING.ORG AND HULA HOOPING TRIBE.

ONE PERSONAL ACCOUNT ~ 2.5 years ago, I was exploring more barrel rolls and angle hooping and just generally hooping A LOT with a maybe 36" d, 3/4" 160 psi hoop and a gazelled & taped 160psi 5 wick fire hoop (Spiral and I got together and drilled holes in the heavy tubing to scale down our fire hoop sizes and weights for greater freedom.) Anyways, I was repeatedly getting this really tender, swollen spot between my left breast and armpit. A friend and local rolpher believed my left lymph node was getting aggravated, probably due to *extreme* hooping. Not long after, I made some hoops out of 1/2" and 3/4" 100psi tubing to decrease the pressure on this part of the body. My fire hoop is also now *super light,* grippy and liberating! (More info on Scott's bomb fire hoops another time ;-) The tenderness is much less frequent- almost non-existent...

Other folks have mentioned ceasing knee hooping or having back pain or having to switch to hooping in only one direction b/c of throwing one side out of whack. Unfortunately, there are a few folks who have had to set down their hoops for extended periods of time or dramatically limit their hooping freedom. After hooping for over 6 years, I do find certain areas of my body require more attention after a long weekend of hooping. Maybe age just requires more commitment to post hoop stretching to relieve the wrists, elbows, shoulder girdle and hip flexors:-)

HOOPING AS HEALING ART
If you have a healing through hoop dance experience you'd like to share, that is a profound aspect of this movement form that we share. There are previous threads on this topic that i posted about a year ago. I do trust that folks will be ok with me drawing attention to those threads here because of the importance and magic shared within them. Some of the stories are rather personal and sensitive, but also beautiful and inspiring.
healerhooperzunited.tribe.net/thr...c6b7
(Can't find the thread from original post in hula hooping tribe right now?)

The date of the first Hoop Convergence will be finalized tomorrow. I've already booked a couple of spaces and musicians for jams and workshops, but i need to finalize a couple more details and compose the *invitation*. As its only 5 months away, I realize the first year may be small, but I believe it's going to be a lovely, informative, varied and FUN gathering of hoopers, teachers, crafters & performers.

Happy Healing Hoop Dancing To All!
In gratitude and revolving joy~

hooping as healing art

Hey there fellow healer hooperz. I am from Carrboro, NC in my sixth revolution around the sun as a devout hooper. I've been making hoops, performing and teaching for most of that time, but just received an opportunity to teach hooping at a National Wellness Conference (nationalwellness.org). I am very excited because, as we all know, hooping has a great deal of magic and healing potential. It will be an honor to present our artform/practice in this context. I have already laid out my workshop plan, but I am preparing an introduction and would like to call out to other hoopers who would like to share with me healing experiences they or their students have had within the hoop.

In my experience, there's a wide range of possibility to explore hooping as a healing art. From the simple movement value to spiritual peace. From preventing diabetes to healing sexual wounds. From overcoming fear to increasing self esteem. In an overweight, depressed and overly medicated society, we should promote all the simple joys and healthy activities we can.

I watched one of my younger hoop students pour energy into the hoop when her parents were divorcing. Her family expressed to me that she went out everyday to practice alone and had dealt with the change the best of the siblings.

Once, after a performance at a Dance Exhibition at an Arts Council, a woman came to me in tears and expressed the deep connection felt while watching the dance and certainty the dance would help rape victims. She herself had experienced sexual assault and explained that years of bodywork and yoga had nearly healed her. She was sure that this form of movement would have expediated her healing. For her, it was a revelation that this form of movement that was powerful, sensual & safe. Deeply touched and honored for being blessed to have found this hoop movement, I believe. I have faith that this dance can empower, heal, transcend. I feel deep gratitude to be a part of this movement and to be able to share it.

If you feel able, I would love to hear your stories. If you want privacy, please feel free to email me rather than posting. I appreciate any responses. I think the recent "why do you hoop" post starts this conversation quite well....

So...I waited all night for it to cool off enough for me to get in a good hoop practice. 10:30 PM and it finally gets out of the 80's, the neighborhood is heading off to bed and I head out on to my back deck. I am quiet, I try not to bang my hoop even, and I listen to my iPod. I'm a respectful neighbor. But the neighbor's freaking Chihuahua barked his head off at me NON-STOP until I just had to go back inside.

I would give anything for a nice large air-conditioned space of my own! If only...

The editor of the Cambridge Chronicle decided to do an article on the Boston Hoop Troop. Yeah! We're in the news! (we're local celebritites :) :) This online article has the story, photos & a video. The print article is coming out on Thursday.
We're really big dorks (me especially) but my favorite part by far is Ammon in the video doing the Hurricane...

Here's the link to the article/pics/vid
http://www.townonline.com/cambridge/homepage/x1681066604

We hope this will inspire more hoopers in the area to come play with us!

Happy Hooping,

a truly hilarious hooping moment

This really is a "you had to be there" thing...

I was hooping outside last night and it had rained earlier, so I toweled off my practice hoop and started to practice on the back deck. I quickly learned 2 new moves from talking to people on Tribe that are REALLY easy but totally look hard. So, yay!

So, I got to really grooving cuz I was so happy, and I did a big toss up over my head and turned underneath the hoop and just as it reached its peak, it hit the tree over my head and I was DROWNED by rain that had collected on the leaves. I dropped the hoop and was like "SHIT!!!" and stood there shocked and soaked.

OMG I wish you guys could have seen that. My Dad was like, "yeah I used to like to kick a wet tree if someone was standing underneath it". Har har...oh thank goodness there was no video camera or this would be on youtube for sure...

Just one last note to remind everyone of the big weekend we have planned down here in NC this weekend, July 12-15th. We would love to have as many people come as possible. If you are close by, you won't want to miss our Hoopers' Ball on Sunday night from 7-10 pm.

We're still finalizing our rolls, but we may have some spots available in our workshops for those interested. If you would like to sign up for those please email us at thehooppath@gmail.com.

All the events (except for the workshops) are totally free and open to the public. Even if you're not a hooper, you can still come on Sunday and check it out!

If you didn't get enough Community on WHD, this is another shot.

Here is a link to the Hoop Path Tribe which has a LOT of info about the Retreat Weekend.

LOST psi hoop at unHARMONY festival

Putting out notice to the community at large that Christina's PSI hoop went missing from the Tribal Techno party at the Harmony Festival. The entire situation is pretty maddening. We stashed our hoops with some other psihoops behind the sound board and went to go get a drink, when we got back our hoops were missing. After searching for 2 ours (during Shpongle nonetheless) we were able to recover my hoop, but not Christina's. If you hear of someone accidently ending up with a neato LED hoop after that event, please let us know as it was a very special hoop.

I could rant and rave about people picking up hoops that do not belong to them, but I think all of us hoopers here already understand this frustration.

Prayer for Humanity - Harmonic Shift 777 (Raphiem)

For those wanting to pray alone or in a group for July 7 - Harmonic Shift ... the below may help ... recited together or individually ... Feel free to amend/edit/add and share ...

-Raphiem
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let us open our hearts in prayer with the innocence and purity of Children ... for the Heart of a Child is only a Heartbeat from Eternity ...

---

We call upon the Earth our Mother ...

Beloved Earth Mother ... on this day we are praying to you ... we are praying as one voice ...

Blessed is the fruit of your womb ...

May your crystal heart reach up and touch our hearts with the resonance of our your Divine Being ...

May your crystal heart help to ground our dreams of a new Earth and Humanity deep into the core of our physical reality and Divine Being ...

---

We call upon the Beloved Air ... We are praying as one voice ...

We stand as one with you ...

We invoke the air to blow through the wind and flow through us to remove all obstacles that block our pathway of expansion and enlightenment ...

Let us breathe in the sacred breath of Life ...

Let us breathe in the breath of Divine Empowerment ...

Let us breathe in deeply the prana of our Divine Being ...

Let the winds of change blow over us and amplify our senses of awareness to perceive the world in a new light of expanded awareness ...

May the Wind always blow through our minds and thoughts and provide us with knowledge to succeed to our highest and greatest potential ...

---

We call upon the Waters of Life ... the Water of Life is sacred ... on this day we are praying to you as one voice ...

We hold our universal cup high and we ask that the dews of heaven flow freely through us as an expression of unconditional love to bless all life ...

Let the waters flow freely through us to bless every man, women and child in the presence of their Divine Being ...

---

We call upon the Fire of Life ... the Fire of Life is sacred ... on this day we are praying as one ...

We invoke the flame of Divine Inheritance to spark the fire of passion and purpose deep within the core of our Being ...

Let the sacred fire burn through the cords of limitation ... burn the ties and attachments that no longer serve our Divine purpose ...

Let the sacred fire burn through all patterns of insecurity, denial and unworthiness ...

Let the sacred fire burn through all addictive behaviors and negative patterns that have hampered us from attaining our Divine purpose and Being ...

We hereby activate the fire of our Divine Potential to see beyond our limitations so that we may fulfill and actively participate as the children of a new Earth to create a better world of love and light ...

Let that fire burn deeply within the core of our being and touch our sacred hearts with lessons that will open us to see, feel and hear, the sounds to the Source of our Being ...

Allow the passion motivation and intention of our higher selves ... our Divine Being to connect our thoughts into the higher frequencies of love and light, where Humanity's true purpose is known ...

Allow those feelings of ecstasy to ignite every cell in our body so that we shall succeed in every way, in every moment as Divine Beings of Light ...

And in wholeness of Spirit we shall begin to walk the walk, to speak our truth, and begin to actively participate in creating the reality around us ... a new Earth ...

Let us heal the war between our heads and our hearts ... betwen our ego and spirit ... so there will be no more wars between our neighbours and nations ...

Let us heal our own pain and anger ... so there will be no more violence but only love ...

Let us release all our lost expectations ... so we may walk in the beauty of the Present Moment ...

---

We call upon the power within these prayers to ignite the sacred flame within our physical bodies and empower our every action to succeed to our greatest and highest potential of love and light ...

And from this moment forward we invoke the greatest amount of healing, expansion and enlightenment that the All-That-Is will allow unto us ...

Peace be with you ... Always, now, and every moment ...

From the sacred hearts of our souls ... We gift these words to you with unconditional love ...

So Be It

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i had a 2 hr float tank session on Saturday ... nothing much exciting to report other than the spiralling/spinning effect as normal before i vanish ... over an hour of the 2hr session i did not exist ... gone ... no memory ... zip ... zilch ... i was nothing .... pure nothing .... sometimes i wish i could stay there ... what came out of it ... was a drive to write a prayer for 777 ... i had prayer all over me getting out of the tank ... only a few days before Sharon/WDestiny sent thru the below link ....

so rather than re-invent the wheel ... i took what was a perfect prayer IMHO... and with some editing and addition of my own words ...

SO I rellay want to get involved with a hoop group in my area ASAP after I get back. My parents are in Camarillo and my Boyfriend is in Simi Valley and I split my time up between the two. Anyway, its been on my mind as graduation draws near and I thought I would put out a request for help on the topic.

new tribe ~ "hoop convergence"

Greetings fellow hoopers!
This message is to announce a new tribe called "hoop convergence."

Convergence ~ Movement towards Union

"To gather hoop dancers from a wide array of communities nationwide to share dance techniques, community projects, teaching skills, and personal hooping intentions and experiences. The goal of this event is to create a sense of solidarity within the hoop community and a set of collective goals for using hoops in local communities as part of a global "peace through hooping" movement."
www.hooping.org/archives/000019.html, Christabel Zemor and Kandice Bishop 2003.) This union is not meant to make us all exist under one expression, understanding, style or ethic, but just a coming together for our shared love of the hoop!

So, I thought a tribe to explore, discuss & develop these ideas could be exciting and helpful.

Please also feel welcome to post local, regional, national or international hoop gatherings, conferences, festivals and convergings on this tribe...

"The radii of a circle converge toward the center"

hi all,
I'm writting this as a call to post good tutorial clips for any hoop tricks not involving the mid-section of the body.

I am a very new hooper, and looking for arm & leg manuvours that may be practiced safely while pregnant. I'm finding being reduced to a very low activity level, and being an arm chair enthusiast....is just kind of....well....depressing. I am willing to continue my hooping abstinance if need be though : ) .
Any youtube clips, suggestions, or relavant addy's are much appreciated!

Any clips/ideas?
thanks in advance for your responses!

Hooping.org has been restructured, redesigned and relaunched and I invite you all to stop by and check it out. There's more information about what's been going on posted there, and now that I'm doing this solo as well (Vera stepped down in February) I'd also like to invite you all to contribute your writing, photos, thoughts, videos and more.
The Hoop Path Tour Update for San Francisco, CA (4/1 and 4/3)

Blessings to you, Hoop Community!

I wanted to let everyone that the Second leg of the Hoop Path Tour is set for San Francisco and L.A. I am very excited about the opportunity to teach a second Workshop in SF, called, "The Warrior Path." This space for this workshop has been donated to us, and I will extend that generosity by lowering the tuition to 50 dollars. The space is limited in size, however, so I must limit this opportunity to attend to those who have recently taken a workshop from me (SF, Portland, Eugene, or Seattle.) There is only room for ten of us, so pre-registration is required. "The Warrior Path" is a continuation of the ideas laid out in the "The Hoop Path: First Steps" workshop.

[Note: We are quickly approaching capacity for these SF workshops. Please rsvp to make sure we have a spot for you. thehooppath@gmail.com]

"The Hoop Path: First Steps" Workshop

This 3-hour intensive will introduce you to the inspiring myths and powerful metaphors of The Hoop Path, a spiritual approach to hoopdance that has slowly built itself out of Jonathan Baxter's years of daily Hoop Practice. Bax's teaching incorporates prayerful guidance and unique storytelling as well as the straightforward breaking down of moves and practice of new techniques. This workshop is for those of us who already feel a connection with Hooping that goes far deeper than pure fitness, or for those hoopers who yearn to deepen and expand their Practice into subtler levels of awareness and grace. Together we will define and explore Hoop Path terms such as: pe*A*ce, Ritmo, One Tree/Two Tree; as well as established techniques such as Reversing, Breaking, Paddling and Angle Hooping.

Thoughts based on the recent PacNW shops:

I have learned many lessons already in this tour. Some of you may notice that I have omitted some terms from the curriculum for the "First Steps" workshop. As the workshop took shape we realized that we had been a little too optimistic with regards to how much info we could pack in. We have shortened our list and we believe the workshop is better for it.

Here are some other things we have learned:

1. Students are encouraged to bring pads and pens with which to take notes. We do not provide a printed text, so if you are the sort that likes to have things written down, then by all means, we encourage you. If you should forget, we will have pads available.

2. This workshop is rigorous. We hoop a lot. Though there is a long opening talk, we will easily hoop for two solid hours. Please come prepared with water, snacks, redbull (hooper crack), or whatever else. (I don't endorse redbull, I'm only trying to be funny here.)

3. My workshops are not "move swaps." Atleast, not by design. We work on developing a Hoop Practice and opening oneself up to winds of undiscovered expression. I expected to feel friction with this, but I think not having a list of moves to work through actually relaxed the students who came.

4. We don't actually hoop naked. Sorry. That was just a joke.

5. This didn't come up in PacNW, but we do not allow video taping.

6. The "First Steps" workshop emphasizes the Core and the Current. We will not get into Samurai Hooping.

7. You do not need to have a super small hoop for the "First Steps" workshop.

PERHAPS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING:

Many have asked about what level of hooping skill is required to attend the workshop. This has proved to be a tough question to answer. I would suggest that those interested in coming should have some flight time with hooping in their Second Current, at least, at the waist level. For those of you who are unfamiliar, this means that you should be able to hoop both directions. You do not need to be fluent in both, but some experience in both will make for a much better workshop for you. Know also that we may go over things which are beyond what you can currently do. There is no way of getting around this. If you can afford yourself some patience, this doesn't have to be frustrating. Honestly, I think is the "newbie" hooper who may have the most to gain from the approach we take to Hoop Practice.

It's official, the Hoop Path Tour will be in beautiful LA, CA, on April 7th at the Hollywood Dance Center (http://www.hollywooddancecenter.com/) from 4 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. The space holds a lot of hoopers I'm told, but if you know you would like to come you can hold a spot by emailing The Hoop Path at thehooppath@gmail.com. The cost of the workshop is 65 dollars payable by cash or check at the time of the event. As with all of my workshops, tuition assistance is available to those who have special needs. Below is description of the workshop and some answers to questions you may have.

****I have posted a new video on the Hooping Videos tribe in case you want to see my hooping style.****

2. This workshop is rigorous. We hoop a lot. Though there is a long opening talk, we will easily hoop for two solid hours. Please come prepared with water, snacks, redbull (hooper crack), or whatever else. (I don't endorse redbull, I'm only trying to be funny here.)

3. My workshops are not "move swaps." At least, not by design.

8. This is a BYOH event.

PERHAPS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING:

Many have asked about what level of hooping skill is required to attend the workshop. This has proved to be a tough question to answer.

Watch the entries here!

FIRST PLACE: SHARNA ROSE
Please find attached my enteries to the Hot Hoop Move contest. I had big problems uploading my my footage (youtube mashed its quality so I had to send dv quality images - they took nearly an hour for 20 seconds worth of film - this is why the clips are so short.) So I apologise for the unglamourous way that I have presented the films - I hope you can see the moves enough to get the general idea.

Move 1. Flipper (A Reversal) - Start this move from hooping around the knees. Can be done either side but for the purposes of the demonstration I have done it clockwise. You will need to remove your right leg from the hoop when the gap occurs (if you were doing a kick out you would move the other leg) and then you use the foot to reverse the hoop using the knee as a pivot. Reverse the instructions to do this the other way - Its really hard either way and I cant always get it - the music has to be just right - or I don't practice it enough.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym_P8__DRq0

Move 2. Back around the Summit - Start this move standing upright and lean forward as if you were going to take the hoop behind your back and pop in. If you take the hoop with your left hand then as you come around the right side of your body you need to put your right elbow up and into the hoop, using your body as a pivot push with this elbow and pull back with the left hand. Reverse the instructions for the other side.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ekDuhjQQEE

Move 3. Jack in the Box - Start this move by doing a Reversed Summit. In this clip I start by taking the hoop around my back with my left hand - Instead of reversing the move with the elbow behind the back pop back into the hoop and use your right hand to swing the hoop onto your body (tip - use your left hand to stall the hoop and help with momentum when reversing and turn the direction the hoop is now going in). I find it more difficult to go the other way. You reverse the instructions but somehow my body gets in the way - I think more practice is required by me or it needs more swing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ7fVdbGQVU

Move 4. Back Heel Flick - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop infront and behind the body horizontally at about knee hight. On passing the hoop in front of the body with left hand use the right heel to scoop the hoop behind and up as high as you can behind your back - use your left hand to push the hoop back on your body as you pop back in. This only works this way because if you reverse the instructions the hoop is passed infront of the body.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSlfQeLDsYw

Move 5. Wind up - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop around the body horizontally in front and behind you. As the hoop comes back around your left side to the front, place your right foot on the far of the hoop and push the hoop around so that it comes over your right side, over your head and release your left foot (you can either hold the hoop with both hands or just your right). Twist the hoop over your body again using right hand and jump out backward from the hoop - take the hoop back around to the right behind you, using right hand, and pop in. Turn. Reverse the instructions for going the other way.

SECOND PLACE: Erica Edelman
YouTube Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P90mutX0tUg
Moves:
Move 1: Celeste / Luna
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: This is a fun move that even brand new hoopers can do. The challenge is keeping your balance at the end without hopping, but if you only do a half-turn, then it is much easier (but less fun!) I asked my beginner students to name it, and they came up with either Celeste or Luna, because the end pose looks like those pictures of a lady in the moon.

Move 2: Fun Start
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: Both this move and the previous move can be done by brand new hoopers. I was trying to figure out the "circus start" move (which I can't do) when I stumbled upon this little gem. Newbie Hoopers love it, because it is a fun and easy way to start hooping, instead of just pushing it around the waist.

Move 3: One Shoulder Duckout from Waist Hooping
Difficulty: High Intermediate
Notes: For a while I was exploring with One Shoulder Duckout variations. I put this move on a video on my website showing those variations but no one ever seemed to pick it, or the other variations, up. This one is pretty fun, but not too pretty. I generally don't do it in performances, because it does not have a high enough success ratio. (i.e. it ocassionally goes flying)

Move 4: Isolation with Turn
Difficulty: Advanced
Notes: This is a new one for me. Lots of hoopers do isolations, but I don't think I have ever seen any add a turn to it. It is difficult, but definitely do-able for anyone who already has a one-handed isolation down.

Move 5: "Not the Matrix"
Difficulty: High Advanced
The base of this move is from last year for me, but the end of it is new. It starts out going from a left shoulder duck-out to a right shoulder duck-out WITHOUT putting your head in the hoop. Now, the new part for me: THEN it goes in front of you (without your head inside, again) to a left arm duck-out. If I can get that last piece to a left SHOULDER duck-out, then I can make the move continous.

SECOND PLACE: JESSICA SPARKS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScregYQ55to
The move: SCISSOR SWITCH
accomplished by stepping out of the hoop while hooping on your knees, and using your outside knee to change currents/directions.

THIRD PLACE: NATASHA YOUNG
I call this move the spin cycle. It's swish into a toss with a spin.
My sister used to do this move when she was a baton twirler. A lot of
off body hoopdancing is similar to baton (warrior, for example) so I
thought I would give this trick a try. It's called a one spin in
baton, but I've seen them do three spins and four spins! What I
learned from watching the baton twirlers are the following:
(1) the higher you toss, the more time you have to spin around before
catching the hoop
(2) you need to throw the hoop as straight up into the air as possible
(3) always spot the hoop so that you are always aware of where it is

Advice on european hooping

Hello all you lovely hoopers! I am Alley'Oop(nice to meet you)...and I have been spinning for quite a long time (hitting 5 years or so) I am not very good at posting and being online, but I do check out the hooping online whenever I can. And I was hoping all you wonderful people might be able to help me out with some suggestions.

Im a Poi Spinner and a Hooper, and oddly enough I started with fire, and then moved into performances with black light a little later. I also hold a Pyrotechnics licence and have been performing all over the place as far as Mexico. I have been asked to go to Europe for a fire festival to teach and perform on June 15-17, so i booked a ticket. But it has come to light that I am in a position to get funding from the arts council in newfoundland to do more then just the festival, and this is where you guys come in. Does anyone have any suggestion of who to look up, take classes with, learn from or spin with in Europe?? I have reached a plateau in the development of my hooping art, and it is time to refresh and collaboate with some other commited artists. I have to say, it is amazing how big hula hooping has become, I remember when i first started, there was hardly anything online, now there is this huge community. Its wonderful to see it florish. Thank you to all you people who have the patience to post online, and share your knowledge with others. The computer is really not one of my strong points, but its becoming very apperant that it is important to be online, even for local events.

So keep your eyes out for www.alleyoop.ca . Thanks for any help you might offer, and if anyone knows anything about pyrotechnics in Europe, i would love to have more info about that as well.

Keep living the circle magic

Heyyy, so I just picked up hooping this week and I've been going pretty much non-stop...but I realized yesterday I have developed a major bruise on my left hip bone, and one on each hand below the index knuckle. The hand ones don't bother me but the hip bruise is making is too painful to hoop now. Does this normally happen to beginners? Any suggestions? I don't want to stop hooping!

Thanks so much,
love & light,

hooping camps at burning man?

Greetings hooper hotties... I'm a hooper/poi spinner/staff twirler/environmental activist from out on the east coast (Chapel Hill, NC), and I'm going to be a burning man virgin this year!
I've been to some regional burns, but when I heard that this year was the Green Man, I was definitely inspired. I'll be bringing a solar powered golf cart to help carry around hoops and fire tools (and a biodiesel generator powered camper). I was wondering if there were any camps more or less dedicated to hoopers, especially that served healthy food that I could join?
Thanks for any suggestions you may have...
happy hooping.

New to hooping and new to this tribe. My question for anyone wit imput is what the heck should one wear to practice? I practice in a public area and I am not a skinny mini so I dont like really tight clothes. Today I was lounging around doing homework in baggy clothes and went to pracice and noticed the hoop slipping off my hips alot and was having a lot of trouble saving it when it started to slip. So any suggestions on good material or type of clothing to wear for practice?

What to wear?

I've been wondering about what to wear when performing for a crowd? I know comfortable and funky are obvious but what other advice do friends have on clothing or no clothing and hooping at a show.
I love the way some people dress up their feet, big furry boots and such but truth be told thats going to far from my own style. I guess Im answering my own question but I'm still interested in having the discussion with others.

New Hooping Video Tribe

There are many great hooping videos all over Tribe and the web. Sometimes I look for one video in particular, though, and I can't find it. I bet I'm not the only one. They're named all kinds of things like "My first video" or "Look at this". Let's create a community just for hooping videos and label them with names that make them easy to find later.

This forum will serve as a reference for moves you're trying to learn as well as moves you have to share. It is also a place to showcase hooping performances as well as good ole hooping fun.

We want all your hooping-related art so if you have photos you love, post them too!

Enjoy!

Bizness Etiquette...

As a new, enthusiastic hooper, i am interested in starting a business around hooping. i am in formative stages... and recognize both my stregnths and limitations with hooping. i am in visionary/manifestation stage, and am struggling with some questions around... bizness etiquette.

i have a strong desire to approach my passion for hooping (and bizness) with integrity, mindfulness, honesty, and am very much committed to building community among other hooperz.

as i embark on this journey of building a bizness with hooping, i am interested in creating my own hoop-package, without stepping on the toes of other hooperz who are already doin their thang.

any tips from any hooperz who have already forged their way among surrounding hoop professionals, on how to build alliances, diffuse competetiveness, support one another, and succeed?

thanx and lotsa love

hoopmaking advice please?!

hi everyone! i don't post here often but i need a little bit of advice! so if you could help, that would be great!

i make all of my own hoops and hoops for friends of mine. i was talking to one of my friends about it and she told me how exciting it was. she said she wanted to get into hooping too, but that she was afraid she couldn't cuz she's paralyed from the waist down. i told her she could more than likely get away with doing arm/over the head/neck tricks and spins with it...

so here's my question: i think the hoop should be shorter as not to hit her chair or get her hit in the face...does anyone have any experience in this? i'm confused as to whether or not it should be half the size of a normal adult hoop?? as big as a retail kid hoop from the toy store? shorter?

i really would like to get her into it, and i don't think that her handicap should get in the way of that.

thanks in advance!

hoopers or aspiring hoopers on Oahu?

So... I just made the big move from SF to Honolulu and it appears that there is not a Hawaii hoop group as of yet. I am willing to create one but wanted to see if there are already other hoopers here in the 808 state who'd be interested in a regular gathering or maybe want to co-moderate with me???

Since I am relatively new to hooping, myself, I'd really love to have input from some more seasoned girls and guys. And I did bring 10 hoops over with me so there's enough to get some newbies started as well.

You can post here or email me directly.

Thanks and hoopy love to all!

wanna party and dance?? Hello all you crazy sexy fun hoopers. I am building a stage over my pool for a Halloween bash on Friday Oct 28th....but I don't have anyone to dance on it!! It's sort-of a "if-you-build-it-they-will-come" experiment. I can promise a DJ, free drinks, lots of fun people in costume (usually 100+), and a lit stage over the pool. Any aspiring hoopers or dancers who would like to come and have some fun are welcome.... I live in Hollywood near 3rd and Crescent Heights.

Let me know if you are interested...

Another Mega Hoop Jam at BM, Wed 6-8:30 at Deep End Camp!!!

Finally, a second MEGA HOOP JAM has been scheduled for Burning Man at the rockin' San Francisco camp Deep End!

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 31 6pm- 8:30
DEEP END CAMP
Address: Catharsis and 9 oclock

I have booked the Deep End Camp for a major international frenzy of hula hooping madness! We chose that time because Deep End is a day party camp that closes down shortly after sunset, so sunset didn't work as a time to begin -- but their rockin djs and hundreds of party go-ers are super excited to see all that hula hooping has to offer so please join us and come play! Come show off, come share your moves, come in your finest costume, come naked, just at least come and partake in this mega meeting of hoopers! Also, DJ KRAMER will be spinning the sunset closing set of the day until we close (7-8:30pm). So come warm up and trick-out for the first hour and then totally loose it to some super hot tribal progressive house music until the close!

ALSO...

I will be teaching two community classes at Deep End as well -- come play... multilevel, all abilities... hopefully will be co-facilitated by some amazing fellow hoopers if there are many many people who show up.
DATES: Wednesday August 31 and Thursday September 1
TIME: from 2-3.

Kirstin Slye will be teaching poi classes right before me from 1-2 as well, so come spend a whole afternoon with us if you like!

want to join deep end camp or just learn more? check us out at www.thedeependcamp.com

See you on the playa!

Critical Mass Hula Hooping in DC Sept. 24th!!

Hey all, let's initiate critical mass hula hooping during the major protest against the war during summit meetings of the IMF/World Bank in DC on September 24th!! I don't think I need to tell you why this would be such a relevant and powerful statement....

Lots of people are meeting at the Washington Memorial at 11am on that Saturday for a massive march and concert. Perhaps we could meet up in this area. There are other protests/happenings happening all over the city Sept. 23-26th. Here's a website with lots of info.: www.septemberaction.org
and
dc.indymedia.org
is a good source of alternative media coverage and event info.

Please make suggestions for how to organize this (it seems like if we have a place and time to meet, and individuals have affinity groups/friends/family (plan ahead for problems that may be encountered) to look out for each other, this can be pretty simple to organize)!! My thought is since many of us know how to make our own hoops, not only can we bring our own hoops, but we can make some to bring along and pass out (It ends up costing me roughly $17 to make 10 basic hoops). Maybe if you don't know how to make hoops, you could donate the cost of supplies to someone who does...

I realize this is somewhat last minute, but let's start talking and get this happening!!!

Hey guys and gals,
I am a newbie here, just got my first hoop at High Sierra, and very eager to start making them for everybody I know!
The hoop I bought is weighted with water and I wanted to know the advantages/disadvantages of this before I start construction.
Thanks in advance for any insight.

That is my question.

I really want to bring my fire hoop to the playa... but I am out of kevlar wicking, am leaving Friday for the Playa, and don't have time to receive an on-line order.

Anyone out there willing to provide wicking for my hoop?

Please message me direct and I'll let you know how to find me.

Thanks,

lost hoop

it's a longshot, but a much-loved hoop was taken from outside a storefront on Guerrero at 18th early last week... it's big and heavy with a battered lime green and blue tape job. A well-meaning but not-thinking friend dropped it off for me, and of course, I never saw it again. This makes me very sad. If you happen to have it, or know someone who is all excited about this great street score they got, please pretty please contact me; I would dearly love to be reunited with it. You will be rewarded in this life and the next.
love and light,

Hi there everyone.. so we have an official hoop down night at the Hookah dome (and the Deep End TBA) on Thursday evening (sundown). The Hookah Dome is located on the Esplanade. I will post the exact location when I get it. They have some gogo platforms as well as lots of ground space and will play whatever we want. Their djs play everything from Breaks to ambient to trance so we can also just request something. They are really excited to have all of us hoopers so I hope we can get as many hoopers there as possible!

see you in the dust!

Hailing all Shambhala-ites!

Every year, we all gather together our disjointed collection of outrageous outfits, hats, wigs and whacky attitude and head to the Kootenays for the best summer party on earth. The only thing missing in the past was one great costume theme to tie it all together. One night where we all focus our collective creative energy to create the craziest dance-off Shambhala has ever seen; and the final battle for our souls…

I give you…

!!! The Good vs Evil Final Show Down !!!

…lets finish this once and for all!

You pick your true side of the law and dress to impress! SuperHeros vs SuperVillians. Ghosts and Ghouls vs Angels and Saints. Wild West Outlaws and Dirty Cowgirls vs the Space Cowboy. Afro Gangsters vs the Funk Police. The possibilities are endless… you choose a side and a costume and be there to defend freedom or to break the rules like never before! We want to get as big a group as possible into the collective spirit and dance like the world is coming to an end!!!

The Good vs Evil Final Dance Show Down is going down at the Main Stage of Shambhala on Saturday night for DJ Lorin and Hoola!

Evil on the Left, Good on the Right, be there at Midnight!"
Hooping Demonstration in NYC for Olympics. Anyone interested?

Hi,
I'm new to the tribe but wanted to create an opportunity that I think could be memorable. This is very short notice but considering the symbol of the olympics are 5 hoops, I've decided to see if anyone wants to come en masse and do a hoop demonstration? It would happen in Rockefeller Plaza while a band is playing live. It's an indie-pop band (ala Flaming Lips) that wants to create something fun and memorable during what might be the only time this type of thing would be allowed on such a tightly wound landmark. It's happening on Tuesday, 7/5 @ 6PM. If this interests you, please contact me directly.

1. Cheap wicks with copper in them.... where do I get 'em?

2. All the fire safety tips and clues you got... what are they?

3. My hoop is pretty big with the rods on it... so, what tricks should I avoid... I'm noticing that spinning vertically (because I'm kinda on the short side anyway) might not be such a good idea because of the hoops size.

Anyway... I'm looking forward to lighting up.

Hoop-happy,

Alegria

Searching for specific types of hula hoops, can you help?

Anyone know of any hula hoops like this:

*a glow-in-the-black light hula hoop?
*a glow-in-the-dark hula hoop?
*a hula hoop, maybe clear, with a light(s) inside of it, so when it spins, the light moves around or just sets there all lit up? I'm picturing this kind for a rave...
*a hula hoop that looks wooden, earthy, tribal...something that would look good with a sword and bellydancing?

I'm new, don't know the first thing about hoops, what's available, etc.

thanks!
